Our School is a Place Where …
We don’t all have to be the same.
We don’t all have to think the same.
We don’t all have to act the same.
We don’t all have to talk the same.
We don’t all have to dress the same.
We don’t all have to believe the same things.
Harvey Milk is a Place Where …
We have the right to be ourselves.

Every morning at 9:30am the whole school gathers for “morning circle” and this morning it was a dance party! (Thanks to Martin Rawlings-Fein for the video).
It’s the first day of the 2011-2012 school year and we’re delighted to welcome our new principal, Ms Tracy Peoples. She wrote, in her welcome letter, to all parents and guardians and students, “There is a lot of excitement ahead for me as the new principal and I’m looking forward to meeting you and your children. Thank you in advance for your continued support at HMCRA. I’m sure, as a team, the coming year will be a rich and rewarding experience for everyone.”

We are well into our third week of school and I want to remind parents, guardians, and everyone else in our community of the many things you can do to support our beautiful school. Our Fall Pledge Drive is ON and we greatly need and appreciate your donations large or small, but there are many other ways YOU can support us today:
With your time – You can volunteer your time to the classroom, to the office, or to many of the events that we put on at the school. See our Volunteer page for more information.
While shopping – Give your Safeway card number (or other card numbers) to eScrip and select the school when you sign up. eScrip is an easy way to shop and have a percentage come back automatically to the school. All you have to do is sign up yearly, choose our school, and everything else is done for you. We also partner with Zazzle and other online stores. Find out more about eScrip and other partners here on the Fundraising Partners page.
By company matching – Friends of Harvey Milk has a company match program. Check with your company today: Your company may match funds automatically as you donate from your paycheck.
Lastly, for parents and guardians, showing up at school meetings and events is an excellent and important way to support our school. Tonight is Back to School Night, 6-8pm at the school. Our Home-School connection is really important and we would like to see 100% attendance tonight. New and continuing parents are encouraged to join us! It is a direct opportunity to get information from your classroom and the school as a whole.
Thanks for your support, and I look forward to seeing you all tonight!
Peace,
Christina Velasco, Principal
On June 9, Principal Velasco took to the airwaves on Comcast Newsmakers to discuss school funding and the way the school incorporates teaching standard core curriculum along with empathy, kindness, social and emotional intelligence, being advocates for others, being a learner, and use of “families” of mixed grades/ages so kids can learn from each other. If you missed it, you can watch it here.
