The children were stellar—from Charlie Brown to Madonna. And the turn out was spectacular. We sure know how to pack the house.

Thanks to all the staff,  volunteers and of course the children who worked so hard to make last night a memorable event. The themes were really thoughtful and the trains and trees and other visuals really well executed.

Thanks to Heather and Libby for making the Read-a-thon a great success. And thanks to Sarah and her volunteers for running the Book Fair. We can’t grow successful readers without books.

Thanks to Betty for working with me to get the sweatshirts ready to sell last night. They turned out great. Kestler was so excited he slept in his last night. Many parents were interested in adult sizes so let’s buy up the youth inventory so we’ll have cash to order more in the new year.  Thanks to Michelangelo for the great logo. They truly highlight our pride.

And a final thanks to Amanda, Lisa and Jasmine for hosting a winter camp to help working families and those who just need time to get ready for the holidays. I thought Kestler would want a change of scenery but he loves the comfort of our community. I couldn’t ask for a better holiday gift.

It’s here! The Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy Holiday Design Bazaar is SATURDAY, November 19, 2011, noon-6pm.

Join us at Harvey Milk for some excellent and unique gift ideas by local artisans and designers. You’ll find something for every budget and in a wide range of styles, AND you’ll be benefiting the arts programs at our school while you shop!

WHAT IT IS: Local artists and designers sell their wares and donate 25% of their sales for the day. (We will also have a ‘Harvey Milk’s Own’ table, with Spike’s Coffee, HMCRA t-shirts, and more)

PLUS: a booth on the value of arts education, DJs throughout the day, silent art auction, live drawing/sketch artists, activities for the kids (face painting, art projects, etc.), childcare, and yummy food!

WHY: The proceeds of the bazaar will go towards our developing visual and performing arts program. This event was created last year to provide Arts Education in every classroom. This year, a Visual Artist will provide 10 art classes to all 11 classrooms through SFArtsEd Artist in Residence program starting in January (http://sfartsed.squarespace.com/artists-in-residence/). Our dream is to raise enough money to not only fund our artist in residence, but also to bring back Performing Arts Workshop for creative movement and capoiera classes in the Spring.

With your help, we will be raising $6,000 for the school and our kids.  We are asking every family to participate and sell as many items as possible so that we will reach our goal!  The fundraiser started last Wednesday and will end on Wednesday 2nd November.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
     1.Sell or purchase items – Complete the order form and collect the money as you sell.
     2. Please make checks payable to: Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy.
     3. Register your child(ren) at www.ShopBelieve.com and send emails to all of your family & friends nationwide. They will be able to shop online to support our and HMCRA!

   1.  Parents & Guardians:-  will need to register your child(ren) at www.ShopBelieve.com.  For additional prize opportunities, you can send 10+ standard emails via the site to friends / family / neighbors / co-workers – there will be a direct link to the site to ensure that your child(ren) and school receive credit for any and all sales.
   2.  Family / Friends / Neighbors:-  They can log onto the site and select ‘Supporters Shop Now”.  
They will need to have the students full name, and the name & state of the school.  
PRIZES PRIZES PRIZES
    1.  Students will win numerous prizes for the prize envelop – the more you sell the more you will earn! 
    2.  Charm necklaces – for every 5th, 10th and 20th item sold you will earn a charm necklace.  There is a scooter drawing for every ‘charm’ coupon turned in!

Last month our school was captivated by a visit from Expedition Impossibles’ winning team The Modern Gypsies. (John Post, Eric Bach, Taylor Filasky)

ABC’s Expedition Impossible followed 13 teams across Morocco in an Indiana Jones style race. The winning team spoke at Harvey Milk about what it took for them not only to be chosen to be on the show, but the kind of teamwork and skills it took to win the race.
The Modern Gypsies spoke about their strong teamworking strategies which support each other do do their best – a message HMCRA students are empowered with from Coach Glenn and the teachers on a regular basis. They also spoke about the academic skills necessary to win this kind of race. Sure, they had to be able to wrangle stallions, repel cliffs, and ride camels , but they needed to call on their intelligence and mental toughness as much as their physical strength.
Collectively, the Modern Gypsies have worked, volunteered, lived in and traveled to over 45 countries. After the race, they continue to inspire individuals to explore both themselves and the world around them, and to raise awareness and generate funds to address the many challenges faced by the impoverished world.
Joining them was Shane Shooter Nelson who worked on the show – designing and testing the course.  Being a trailblazer himself, he inspired the children to consider themselves as adventurers and to believe in their potential – to take risks – to realize that any one of them could be riding those stallions in a future that they are building now.
