PFC Notes 8/10/10

Hello and welcome back everyone!

1. The PFC is the Parent/Faculty/Staff club of Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy. Everyone is automatically a member. Meetings are generally held at 6 pm the second Tuesday of the month. Dinner and childcare are provided. The PFC fundraises along with our non-profit arm, the Friends of Harvey Milk. This year we have four co-chairs: Sarah Kern, Karen Thompson, Angel Grillone and Vincent Leddy. The treasurer is Terry Asten.

The other two groups supporting school fundraising and decision making are the Friends of Harvey Milk (FOHM) and School Site Council (SSC).

2. Principal report – Welcome from Ms. Velasco – this year’s theme is “Together We’re Better.” She reminded us of upcoming events (list at the end of minutes) especially the parent-principal chat immediately following morning circle first day, 8/16/10. Also special thanks to Terry Asten who bargained and scrambled for best deal classroom supplies.

3. Budget report and vote – Terry handed out a summary of budget + incoming + projected expenses. The two big changes from last year are (1) funding of literacy support for 1st and 2nd grade classrooms to get kids reading by 3rd grade; and that we will fundraise this year for meeting night expenses. We agreed to float a loan to FOHM to ensure that expenses for before and after school are covered; FOHM is expecting a grant payment from SFUSD soon and will repay PFC then.

Along those lines, some of the funding we were expecting for activities last year (like PFC night meals) were not eligible for funding from the afterschool grant, so this year it will be potluck… see item 5.

One more change will be to the annual carnival/auction – Terry lowered our expected income from that event because we are going to focus on the auction part – who knows? It may do better that way.

4. Parent Liaison Report – Shawn Maceira – her theme for this year is “More Community in Every Classroom” – she would like at least five room parents for each classroom and encourage families to do more together outside of school.

5. This year’s PFC meeting night food will be prepared or purchased by parent volunteers. We will need two volunteers per meeting, to feed up to 100 people for $150. The PFC can reimburse volunteers or provide cash up front, but receipts are always needed even if you want to donate the food, so that we can count it in our budget. Karen and Heather volunteered to feed us in September. Thank you Sarah for great chili and guacamole! and to Shawn for taking care of us all last year!

6. R&B cellars has already begun producing our three wines – they are going to try to sell in stores as well as to parents and friends. (See 9/11 labeling party below.)

8. Fundraising Opportunities and other upcoming events – volunteers welcome! (If you ever forget any please check the calendar at www.harveymilk.com.)

Sunday 10/3 – Castro Street Fair, 10 am – we will need to volunteer the day before, the day of and the evening of, for as little as 1 hour. The school gets paid based on how many volunteers we have that sign in at the admin booth (Collingwood and Market) and spend time staffing the gate, running errands, and other activities to keep the fair safe and fun. This year’s theme is “Get your Freak On!” meaning costumes, costumes, and maybe some feathers. Email usat64atattdotnet to be included on the volunteer list.

Finally – one email address to reach the 4 PFC co-chairs – pfcfundraisingatharveymilkdotcom!

hi liz and karen and everyone! i’m just testing comments. could be a great way to encourage dialog on the notes from our meetings — especially for folks who can’t actually make it to the meetings.
